Here is just a brief post to share the English version of the talk I gave in Tokyo past September on Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Safety.
The presentation aimed at answering the following questions:
- Why Japan needs Nuclear Energy ?
- Why Nuclear Energy needs a new generation of reactors ? (so called Fast Breeder Reactors)
- What are FBR all about ?
- What are the basic principles of Nuclear Safety, and how were they challenged during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima 1 NPP accident?
- How “built-in safety” will improve it in the future ?
The content level is a bit of a mixed bag, struggling to offer an analysis as accurate and detailed as possible without being overwhelmingly technical.
In the end, the beginning focuses in the general public, but some parts about nuclear safety may be tough on anyone without an engineering background.
I do hope though that the main ideas remain understandable by everyone but, if that is not the case, please feel free to ask any questions in the comments.
You can watch the PowerPoint presentation in the embedded window bellow, or full screen (use the icon on the bottom-right corner).
In both cases I believe the animations help to follow the reasoning (left-clic / tap on the slides or use your keyboard arrow-keys).
However, if you prefer you can also download PDF versions in the links right afterwards.
Finally, you can find the original presentation in French at the end of the post.
